BEE'S KNEES, and other such nonsense

Mike said this the other day to finish my sentence. (I was struggling to think of "cream of the crop" or some "best of the best" sort of phrase.) I laughed and asked, "What sort of phrase is that??" Well, after some googling I learned that bees DO, in fact, have knees. Now what that has to do with being the "height of excellence" I just don't know. And while we're on the subject, isn't it a scientific mystery that bees can even fly? Wouldn't it be more appropriate that when we're in awe of something we say, "Well isn't that just the bee's flying capabilities?" ...just a thought.

Anyway I was thinking of all this as I tossed Suzie onto my bed. She comes in my room and immediately wants up. She just thinks this is the COOLEST THING EVER. (Nope, I didn't say it.) She laughs and she flails. She plays peek-a-boo and buries her face to listen to her muffled voice. And every few seconds makes sure that her mommy is watching. Simple pleasures. I imagine this won't be the highlight of her day when she's 15.

One of Garret's favorite things (He can say "bee's knees" if he wants. Heck, he can say ANYTHING and that would be cool.) is Toy Story. Spend some time in the same room with the boy and you may wonder if this kid EVER sits down. Yes he does thanks to Woody and Buzz.

Hmmmm, with Brenda it's hard to pick one thing. Let's go with digging. Just this afternoon she was on time-out for throwing dirt on Suzie. (I guess she decided it wasn't worth it 'cause later she just threw dirt on herself.) I'm not sure why she does it but she's always excited to show me the worms... "Look, mommy!"... "Oh, cool! Uh oh, Brenda. But Mr worm lives OUTSIDE. He is SCARED in the house. Let's take him HOME. OUTSIDE... Good girl."

What do I think is the "bee's knees"? (it's growing on me) mmmmmmmmmMike. 'Cause today he battled evil, lawn-killing moles for me.

Did you draw that cool bee? And admit it, bee's knees is kind of fun to say.

No, I stole the picture off google images. And yes, bee's knees, bee's knees, bee's knees...

It would be even cooler if it was spelled with a "z". Beez kneez, beez kneez, beez kneez....

Hi Lindsay. I came across your blog from a link my mom has posted on her's. I hope you don't mind if I comment on bees. They do have something like knees, at least they function much the same, but structurally they have a separate origin from vertebrate knees. Among entomologists these structures don't really have a name, but something like arthroidial membrane would be more appropriate than knees. And a word on flying, bees do not defy the laws of physics. Whoever said that failed to account for allometrics: air is comparably much more viscous when you are the size of a bee. So what they do is something closer to swimming in air. However, if a bee were the size of a human, it would not fly, this is true. The roller skating bee is cute. Don't tell, but her gender-specific anatomy is showing. It looks like little Brenda has the beginnings of an invertebrate biologist in her. Keep up the good work.
